Dr. Brad Donaldson becomes new president and CEO of Lethbridge College

August 10, 2022 admin Education

Dr. Brad Donaldson becomes new president and CEO of Lethbridge College

Lethbridge College has a new leader at the helm.

Dr. Brad Donaldson will become the ninth president and CEO in the post-secondary’s history.

He takes over from Dr. Paula Burns who resigned earlier this year to take the same position at Langara College in Vancouver.

“It’s a real great fit for what I value and what the college values as well,” Donaldson said.

Donaldson brings with him more than 17 years of post-secondary experience, including roles as vice-president academic at Red Deer College and, most recently, SAIT.

He holds a doctor of education degree in educational leadership, as well as a master of engineering and a bachelor of applied sciences in chemical engineering.

Donaldson was selected through a national search, a six-month process involving more than 160 stakeholder engagements and 130 applicants.

“Brad at the end definitely emerged as our strongest candidate and we’re very excited to announce this today. It’s been a long time coming,” Michael Marcotte, the chair of Lethbridge College’s board of governors, said.

Donaldson said he wants to continue fostering the college’s connections within the southern Alberta community.

“The role will be within connecting with community leaders, and community as a whole. It doesn’t just have to be the leaders,” he said. “Drawing all that together to find the best way to move forward to serve those communities.”

Donaldson will begin his new role on Sept. 6, the first day of the fall semester.

‘One lakh applications pending for Canada’: BJP MP flags issue of student visa delays in Lok Sabha

August 2, 2022 admin Education

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, Shetty said several students, who had returned to India during the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine war, were finding it difficult to get visas to pursue studies abroad.

Study abroad, Gopal Shetty

BJP Lok Sabha member Gopal Shetty on Tuesday urged the government to take up the issue of pending visa applications, particularly of students, with embassies of foreign countries.

Raising the issue during the Zero Hour in Lok Sabha, Shetty said several students, who had returned to India during the Covid pandemic and the Ukraine war, were finding it difficult to get visas to pursue studies abroad.

“Several students have paid Rs 10-15 lakh as fees and are finding it difficult to get visas as several embassies are still closed. The problem is particularly acute with Canada where more than one lakh visa applications are pending,” Shetty said.

He said cultural troupes from Gujarat were finding it difficult to get visas for performances in the US.

Shetty, a member from Mumbai North, urged the government to take up the issue with respective countries and also issue a clarification to the effect as the problem was with the embassies and not with the External Affairs Ministry.

Veterans can now teach in Florida with no degree. School leaders say it ‘lowers the bar’

Veterans can now teach in Florida with no degree. School leaders say it ‘lowers the bar’

A potential solution to a statewide teacher shortage issue has education leaders feeling as though Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration is undermining the qualifications of classroom instructors.

Last week, the Florida Department of Education announced that military veterans, as well as their spouses, would receive a five-year voucher that allows them to teach in the classroom despite not receiving a degree to do so. It’s a move tied to the $8.6 million the state announced would be used to expand career and workforce training opportunities for military veterans and their spouses.

“There are many people who have gone through many hoops and hurdles to obtain a proper teaching certificate,” said Carmen Ward, president of the Alachua County  teachers union. “(Educators) are very dismayed that now someone with just a high school education can pass the test and can easily get a five-year temporary certificate.”

On June 9, the Florida Legislature passed a bill that gave the approval for military members, both former and present, and their spouses to teach. Reserve military members count, as well.

Teacher candidates must have a minimum of 60 college credits with a 2.5 GPA, and also must receive a passing score on the FLDOE subject area examination for bachelor’s level subjects.

Veterans must have a minimum of 48 months of military service completed with honorable/medical discharge. If hired by a school district, they have to have a teaching mentor.

Alachua County school board members expressed their distaste for the new law at a recent workshop where the details were presented.

Tina Certain said she feels like the bill lowers the bar for educators.

“It’s not that I’m against the service that veterans provide to our country,” she said. “I just think that to the education profession, we’re lowering the bar on that and minimizing the criteria of what it takes to enter the profession.”

Certain also made clear that she doesn’t want the district to push those teachers all to lower-performing schools on the east side of Gainesville.

Another school board member, Rob Hyatt, while expressing his frustration, appeared to be more optimistic.

“Unfortunately, we, like all other school districts, are experiencing a very real shortage,” he said. “I think that this legislation is a reaction to the fact … I have confidence in our HR department to make the best out of this.”

The Alachua County public school district currently has more than 60 teaching vacancies. Since the law passed, no veterans or spouses have applied to the school district for a job, spokeswoman Jackie Johnson said.

“But if someone were to contact us expressing interest in the program, we would help them with the process for earning the state certification,” Johnson said. “If they were successful, they would then be eligible to apply for a job with the district, as would anyone with a valid certification.”

Ward, however, feels it’s the wrong approach to the issue, saying that more support and better pay would close the vacancies.

“There’s an assumption that if you were a student, that you are also qualified to be a teacher,” Ward said. “That’s not necessarily the case and so it’s just highly concerning because we’ve always had a high standard for educators in the public school system.”

Rwandan Students To Learn Turkish With Yunus Emre Institute

The Turkish Yunus Emre Institute will soon start Turkish language courses and cultural and academic exchange programs in Rwanda, furthering Turkey and Rwanda’s seven-year-old bilateral relations. The Institute will offer several new education programs to the East African nation, as well as diplomat training programs and scholarships, Turkey’s envoy to Rwanda said Monday.

Ambassador Burcu Çevik told Anadolu Agency in an email interview that a delegation headed by Yavuz Kartallıoğlu, director of Turkish language at the Yunus Emre Institute, visited the Rwandan capital Kigali from April 12-17 to meet the university’s top officials.

Çevik said the institute will soon be sending a lecturer from Turkey to Kigali to start Turkish courses at the university.

“Those who are interested in learning Turkish for academic and business purposes will be able to do so soon in Rwanda,” she said, adding that the program will most likely start this year.

The diplomat revealed that the Turkish cultural institute and the university signed an agreement on cooperation in December 2019. “The MoU will be implemented with the initiation of Turkish language courses,” she said.

Çevik added that Turkey has declared 2021 as “The Yunus Emre and Turkish Language Year,” and Turkish courses in Rwanda will help bring the people of the two countries closer.

“Cooperation will be strengthened further with academic and cultural exchanges, hopefully turning into a fully functioning Turkish Cultural and Language Center within the university,” she said.

Although Turkey only established its embassy in Kigali in 2014, bilateral relations today are at their best, according to Çevik.

The two countries have already signed 20 cooperative agreements in fields ranging from education to trade and investment, she said, adding that Turkey is supporting Rwanda in its endeavors to strengthen its human capital in all fields.

“Turkey has been providing full scholarships to Rwandan students for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Turkey. So far more than 200 Rwandan students have benefited.”

The Turkish envoy said different Turkish institutions are offering training programs to their counterparts in security and defense fields. “Very recently the Diplomacy Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey organized an online diplomatic training program for 41 newly-recruited Rwandan diplomats,” Çevik said.

She shared that Turkey is in the process of opening a Technical and Vocational Education Training College in Rwanda to enable youth to gain valuable skills.
