Turkish universities feature on ‘World’s Top 500’ list

Three Turkish universities have been placed among the world’s best universities, according to a compilation of 11 ranking systems from around the world assessing higher education. Middle East Technical University (METU), Hacettepe and Koç universities have become the country’s most successful universities.

The universities were included in three of the “World’s Top 500 Universities” rankings made by 11 ranking institutions, said a report by the University Ranking by Academic Performance Research Laboratory (URAP) of METU.

METU URAP published the results of the rankings for 203 universities in Turkey. The universities were evaluated by 11 ranking institutions, including METU URAP, Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), Centre for Science and Technology Studies Leiden (LEIDEN), National Taiwan University (NTU), Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings (QS), Round University Ranking (RUR), Scimago Institutions Rankings (SCIMAGO), Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), US News & World Report (US News) and Ranking of World Universities (WEBOMETRICS).

In the report, the world rankings of 11 research universities and five research university candidates during the period of 2013 to 2020 were assessed for the first time. Nine Turkish universities were among the “World’s Top 500 Universities” in 2020, the report showed. METU, Hacettepe, and Koç universities were the top three of the nine universities. Hacettepe University was listed as the 378th by RUR, 455th on LEIDEN, and 500th on URAP, while METU ranked 416th on WEBOMETRICS, 454th on RUR, and 453rd on US News. Koç University took the 450th spot on THE, 448th on RUR and 465th on QS.

“It is a considerable success for our country as these nine universities made it to the top 500 on at least one ranking list in 2020,” said the report. While 10 Turkish universities were in the top 500 worldwide in 2011, last year the number dropped to eight. This year, it has climbed back to nine.

URAP Coordinator Ural Akbulut stressed that Turkish universities put in great effort to reach higher standings in world rankings. “It is observed that the number of published works and citations of our universities generally increases every year, at least a little. But the rate of increase in these numbers remains below the world average,” he said. Akbulut stated that Chinese universities managed to take their places among the world’s best through patience and years of consistent work, and said, “Our research universities can attain success by raising their numbers of published works patiently, without becoming demotivated, by founding new labs and adding skillful researchers from abroad to their faculty staff.”

Turkey’s foreign students adapt to remote education

Remote education is nothing more than a necessity the pandemic era has inflicted on most students. Though elementary and middle school students returned to in-person education in Turkey, those in university still have to suffice with online classes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to take a toll on daily life.

For Turkey’s foreign students, it is an extra challenge and comes with mixed feelings. Though some appreciated the opportunity to spend more time with their families, most students agreed that remote education is not as good as in-person, especially due to a language barrier and lack of access to textbooks physically.

Most foreign students are beneficiaries of the Turkey Scholarships, a successful grants program run by the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). It attracts thousands of students to the country every year. When the universities were shut down last year, they were forced to switch to remote education and some flew home while others preferred to stay. After a long break, universities are gradually being opened, though the majority of classes are being held online.

Azerbaijan’s Laman Suleymanli studies Roman law at Ankara University and is preparing for her upcoming proficiency exam. She returned home when the schools were closed last year and said the pandemic had several “pros and cons” for her.

“I had more time to be with my family, to be closer to my loved ones. I appreciated more how good it is to be able to touch them,” she said.

Suleymanli is working on a project that interprets Turkish laws for the Azerbaijani public. “Remote education was somewhat problematic for me. I had problems like not having access to books and because of lack of infrastructure for a proper remote education,” she told Anadolu Agency (AA) Saturday. On the other hand, she said she was able to find time to read more books while staying home in Azerbaijan.

Kim Seunggwon, a South Korean student of history at Hacettepe University in the capital Ankara, also returned home when the pandemic took hold. Kim regularly shares videos online from his country, mostly empty streets. “I can only go to cafes,” he said.

Tapiwa Last Gilfas Nherera, a Zimbabwean student at Ankara Social Sciences University’s Department of International Relations, said as a foreign student, he faced some obstacles in remote education. “I could not improve my Turkish as much because I cannot meet my Turkish classmates and lecturers in person. I feel like I couldn’t learn anything new. I toil in front of my computer for hours to learn something,” he said. Nherera said he needed to attend in-person activities to improve himself.

“But the pandemic had an advantage for me too. I started learning to play the guitar and found time for physical exercise. I hope this pandemic will be over and we will be back to normal soon. I am bored of being stuck at home,” he said.

More than 165,000 apply for Turkey’s most popular scholarship

Turkey Scholarships, which attract thousands of students to the country every year, have seen huge demand this year as well. Between Jan. 10 and Feb. 20, 165,511 foreign students from 178 countries applied to benefit from grants.

The scholarships, courtesy of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), has turned the country into a popular education hub for students the world over. They are granted to undergraduate, postgraduate students and those pursuing doctoral degrees. The applicants are subject to interviews conducted by academics and YTB officials for eligibility for a scholarship. Each scholarship candidate is assessed for their academic and social accomplishments, their interest in fields they want to study and their eligibility for studying in that field. Upon approval, they are entitled to study in the country’s most prestigious universities.

The program is viewed as a public diplomacy affair for Turkey, which seeks to boost relations with the countries where students arrive and regards graduates as informal envoys to improve those relations. The Turkey Alumni Network, with more than 150,000 graduates from more than 160 countries, works tirelessly to sustain these ties.

The program, specifically designed for international students and researchers, with its all-encompassing scholarship provisions and services, is a gateway to education in the country. What makes the program unique is its provision of university and program placement as part of its scholarship application.

All awardees are provided with a one-year, free-of-charge Turkish language course, regardless of their program or academic background. The students also get the chance to become acquainted with Turkish culture through a variety of trips and programs in their first year.

The scholarship program aims to provide a comprehensive educational experience in Turkey and thus provides arts, culture, history and sports-related social activities and training programs. It also introduces awardees to academics, institutions and organizations working in their respective fields and offers academic counseling services throughout their study period.

The scholarship program, which was launched in 2012, received around 15,000 applications from 172 countries last year. Turkey plans to increase the number of foreign students to 250,000 within the next two years.
